Dear Secondary School teachers,
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!
We start our journey through the year with renewed energy and hope, as well as new and better facilities! The Middle School building and the widening of the road to school are huge improvements!
Last year, the secondary school team showed the strength that only professional teachers can show in moments of crisis. We consolidated results and maintained our quest for excellence in spite of the difficulties of losing experienced teachers and training new ones. However, the new members of our team soon showed their competence and did and excellent job as if they had always been part of GI.
This year, we also welcome new members of the team and, as always, we are certain that the new teachers will prove themselves fundamental for the achievement of our goals. Also, some returning teachers are changing roles and accepting new responsibilities. This is a challenge in their careers and we will be there for them too.
The mentoring program that we put together last year will continue with strengthened support. Some teachers are being trained in coaching in order to help their friends. Ms. Crista Hirmas will, again, devote all her time to work with our new teachers and with all those who express a desire to be part of this effort to improve their practice. Instructional coaching has proven to be of great help for new and experienced teachers equally.
We will also insist on the formation of Professional Learning Community teams (PLC’s) that provide the scenario for professional development as well as informed and intelligent discussions among colleagues. That is why we have decided to modify the school schedule in order to give teachers more time on Wednesdays to meet and study, to talk, learn and reflect on the teaching practice. I am convinced that these conversations will eventually benefit, not only you, teachers, but also –and most importantly—our students.
I wish you the best this year.
